Natural environments contain abundant corrosive elements like sulfur and halogens. Environments strongly correlated with automotive applications, including roads, parking lots, and areas near sewers, are particularly prone to the accumulation of automotive exhaust fumes and marsh gas.

 

Electronic products utilize materials containing significant amounts of reactive metals such as silver, copper, and aluminum. Examples include: resistor silver electrodes, LED silver reflective layers, IGBT substrate copper layers, PCB copper layers, microwave/RF component silver solder layers, integrated circuit chip PAD aluminum layers, etc.

 

These metals readily react with strongly oxidizing elements like sulfur and halogens, forming compounds like silver sulfide, cuprous sulfide, and aluminum fluoride. This can lead to failures in microscopic areas of electronic components, such as open circuits, short circuits, and leakage currents.
